Ashram Chief Among 6 Arrested After Leopard Carcass Recovery In Sonepur

Sonepur: The chief of the ashram was among six people detained by the forest officers on Friday, two days after a leopard carcass was found nearby in the Sonepur district of Odisha.

The six suspects have been named as Dayasagar Tharti, Surendra Pradhan, Biju Guru, Ramchandra Purohit, Purandar Tharti, and Satyanarayan Meher, the head of the ashram. They also turned over the wild cat's claws that were in their possession.

The four-year-old leopard was reportedly electrocuted in the forest, according to sources. Following the filing of the case, the forest officials thought that members of the Ashram were involved in the incident and arrested Dayasagar Tharti to question him.

The police then detained Tharti and five other people for removing the leopard's claws.

Notably, the locals of Baghapalli under the Ulunda range in the district noticed a strong, bad stench in a neighbouring forest when they went there to let their goats graze. They located the leopard's corpse after circling the jungle to find the smell's source. They examined it more closely and saw that it had deteriorated.

"The leopard may have passed away 5 to 6 days ago. It is believed that poachers set a trap in order to kill it. According to SCF Prafulla Kumar Dehury, "The leopard may have become ensnared in the wire trap that the poachers set up to hunt wild boars since electrical cables have been installed close to the jungle.
