Greetings pour in for Nuakhai

Bhubaneswar: On the auspicious occasion of Nuakhai, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik have greeted the people of Odisha.

Nuakhai is not only a celebration, but also an identity of our art, culture, and history, according to Naveen in a video message. “I pray to Maa Samaleswari for a happy and fruitful life for all of you,” he added.

He also urged individuals to behave in a COVID-compliant manner while celebrating the event.

Nuakhai is made up of two words: nua, which means new, and khai, which means food stands for new rice, implying that the farmers had recently harvested rice.

This agrarian event honours the hard work of our farmers, whose efforts ensure that our country is fed. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is being observed in a quiet manner in the state with no assembly.

The preparations, on the other hand, begin almost two weeks before to the celebration. From Behrana through Nuakhai, nine sets of ceremonies are performed as a precursor to the actual day, culminating in Juhar Bhet. The exchange of pleasantries with friends, well-wishers, and family, known as Nuakhai Juhar, symbolises unity as people forget their differences and begin over.

Goddess Samaleswari, the presiding deity of western Odisha, is offered ‘Nabanna' (porridge made from new paddy crop) in exchange for blessings for a bumper harvest.

Nuakhai's oral tradition dates back to the 12th century, when Chauvan Raja Ramai Deo of Patanagarh, now in Balangir district, held the event.
