Baripada: A wild elephant is said to have stamped a man to death on Thursday in Mayurbhanj, Odisha.

According to accounts, the event happened at the district's Ambagadia police station's Ambagadia village. The tusker arrived when the weekly market was bustling with shoppers from Ambagadia and nearby villages during the day.

The villagers fled for their life in fear at the sight of the wild elephant. The crowd began yelling as panic broke out, and the elephant took off across the market area.

Repa Singh from Ambagadia also made an effort to protect himself by hiding next to a motorcycle. Singh was trapped beneath the motorcycle as the startled tusker trampled on it.

The locals picked up the wrecked bike after the elephant left and discovered Singh dead. The neighbouring forest on the Betanati range was where they believed the elephant may have walked into the village. The family of Singh, who worked as a mason and was the only earner in the household, has requested compensation from the locals.
