Bhubaneswar: In the wake of the outrage over Aryan Khan's drug bust, Satya Narayan Pradhan, an Odisha-born senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, has been named Director-General of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).

He has been acting as the Director-General of the National Disaster Response Force while also holding the additional job of NCB DG from June this year, after Rakesh Asthana was appointed as Delhi Police Commissioner (NDRF).

Following the appointment of 1988-batch Gujarat cadre IPS officer Atul Karwal as NDRF Director-General on Tuesday, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) appointed Pradhan as Director-General of the NCB on a full-time basis with effect from the date of his assumption of charge of the post and until his superannuation on August 31, 2024, or until further orders, whichever is earlier, in a late Wednesday order.

The Ministry of Home Affairs has also demanded that Pradhan be relieved of his duties as NDRF Director General immediately so that he can begin his new job.

He is from Bhubaneswar.

Sanjay Kumar, an Odisha cadre IPS officer from the 1996 batch, is currently investigating the drugs-on-cruise case involving Shah Rukh Khan's son.

Singh joined the NCB in January and is now the Deputy Director General at the NCB's New Delhi headquarters.

He previously led the Twin City Commissionerate Police's Drug Task Force, which broke multiple drug trafficking rings.

They aren't the only officers with ties to Odisha who worked for the anti-drug organisation.

Former NCB DG Abhay is the DGP of Odisha. In 2018, the DG of the NCB headquarters in Delhi was an Odisha cadre police officer from the 1986 batch. He went on to lead SVPNPA in Hyderabad before being named DGP of Odisha.

Former DGP RP Sharma, who was also the Commissioner of Police for the Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Commissionerate, worked as the NCB Zonal Director in Jodhpur, where he seized a record amount of illicit substances and arrested a number of international drug traffickers.
