Odisha CM starts distribution of Rs 1K livelihood assistance

Bhubaneswar: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik offered livelihood assistance of Rs 1000 per for Biju Swasthya Kalyan Yojana (BSKY) cardholders in Odisha on Wednesday, in what is being seen as another another pre-election bribe.

The decision, according to the CM, was made to help the poor, who have been particularly hard struck by the COVID-19 outbreak. Money will be given to those who are eligible under the National Food Security Act (NFSA) and the State Food Security Scheme (SFSS).

"While our efforts to save people's lives were successful, the epidemic has had a negative impact on everyone's economic and social well-being, with the poor suffering the most," he stated.

He stated that the poor's welfare was a top concern for his government, and that the action will benefit 96 lakh families. He stated that it will cost the state exchequer Rs 960 crore.

The money must be disbursed to the beneficiaries within seven days, according to the CM.

Naveen had previously announced on Tuesday that it would spend Rs 1,444 crore on giving housing repair assistance to beneficiaries of the Biju Pucca Ghar (BPGY), Nirman Shramik Pucca Ghar Yojana, and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Grameen schemes (PMAY-G).

In all 30 districts of the state, the government had also sanctioned Rs 350 crore for distribution as livelihood aid to beneficiaries of national and state food security initiatives.

Early next year, the state will hold panchayat and urban body elections.
