Odisha Co-op Societies First Phase Election Dates Announced

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government announced the dates for the first-phase election of members to Primary Co-operative Societies committees on Monday.

The election of members to the committees of these societies will take place on June 19 and 22, according to a notification published by the Co-Operation department.

Odisha has about 6,400 basic cooperative societies, 127 central cooperative societies, and 19 apex cooperative societies. The last time these societies were elected was in 2015.

The government postponed the tenure of 1,926 primary cooperative organisations, which was set to end in January 2020 due to their financial difficulties.

Over 2,700 Primary Agriculture Cooperative Societies (PACS) and Large Area Multi-Purpose Cooperative Societies (LAMPS) are associated with 17 central cooperative banks throughout the state. Weavers, fisherman, and milkmen associations, as well as their apex bodies Boyanika, Fishfed, and Omfed, have all had elections.

In November, the Orissa High Court ordered the State Cooperative Election Commission to conduct elections to the Sundargarh District Central Cooperative Bank and primary societies affiliated with it within a reasonable time frame, signalling the government's readiness to fulfil the Constitutional mandate.
