New Delhi: Shanti Devi, a well-known Odisha social worker, died late Sunday night in Gunupur, Rayagada district. She was 88 years old at the time.

According to reports, Shanti Devi was brought to the District Headquarters Hospital after complaining of chest trouble and becoming unconscious. On arrival, doctors proclaimed her dead.

Padma Shri was recently bestowed upon Shanti Devi.

“Shanti Devi Ji will be remembered as a voice of the poor and underprivileged. She worked selflessly to remove suffering and create a healthier as well as just society. Pained by her demise. My thoughts are with her family and countless admirers. Om Shanti,” tweeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 

Shanti Devi's death was announced on social media by Achyut Das, Director of Agragamee, a social organisation in which she served as vice-president.

Shanti Devi, the founder of the volunteer organisation Seva Samaj, was born on April 18, 1934, in the Balasore area. She married Dr Ratan Das, a Mahatma Gandhi devotee, when she was 17 years old. She moved from Balasore to Koraput after her marriage. She later established an ashram in the Rayagada district of Gobarapalli. From there, she began her job as a social worker. She tried to improve the lives of tribal females via development and education.

She also established a leprosy ashram in Jabarguda, in the Rayagada district's Padmapur block. She moved to Gunupur in 1964 after working for a long period in Jabarguda and founding the Seva Samaj ashram there to provide education to tribal girls. She desired to make all girls self-sufficient so that they may live in society with dignity.

She also established an ashram at Gunupur for orphans and destitute children's education, rehabilitation, and vocational training.

Shanti Devi was also a part of the 'Bhoodan' movement, where she collaborated with Acharya Vinoba Bhave. She joined the Utkal Navajeevan Mandal as secretary in 1961.

She was the president of the Odisha Prohibition Congress and a member of several Gandhian organisations.
