Sonepur: Three people were killed and five others were injured when Police Inspector Snigdharani Suna's SUV struck an autorickshaw in the Sonepur district of Odisha on Tuesday morning. She then fled the scene and has since been apprehended. Additionally detained was Ajay Jethi, the SUV's driver. He had left the area as well. Both people were detained in Balangir.

The SUV, a Maruti Ertiga with the registration number OD 16J 1355, belongs to Snigdharani, who is assigned to the Sundargarh district, according to Sonepur SP Amaresh Panda earlier.

Snigdharani was a passenger in the SUV and not the driver at the time of the collision.

After her Ratha Jatra duty in Puri, the police reported that she was headed for Balangir.

To assist us in our investigation, we have notified the state DIG, SP Rourkela, and other officials, added Panda.

Around 6.30 am, an autorickshaw was struck by an SUV that was travelling the incorrect side of the Balangir-Sonepur NH-57. A motorcycle was also hit by the SUV. From Balangir, the autorickshaw was travelling to Sonepur.

Five other passengers in the autorickshaw suffered critical injuries, while three of them died instantly.

In addition to free medical care for those injured, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik promised ex-gratia payments of Rs 2 lakh to each of the deceased's families.

Guabati Jai (age 40), Satya Pradhan (age 45), and Prananath Biswal were named as the deceased (45).

The autorickshaw carrying a bunch of vegetable dealers had halted near Badabahali Chhak.
