Sarat Patnaik appointed as OPCC president after 18yrs

Bhubaneswar: The Congress high command named veteran politician Sarat Pattnayak as the president of the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (OPCC) on Monday, putting an end to all uncertainty.

"Congress President Rahul Gandhi has accepted Niranjan Patnaik's resignation...

With immediate effect,..... has selected Sarat Pattnayak as the president of the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee. "The party values the contributions of outgoing OPCC president Niranjan Patnaik," the AICC General Secretary said in a press release.

In May 2019, Nirajan resigned as president, citing the Congress' poor performance in the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections.

Sarat told the media after his appointment that he would try to strengthen the party's organisation. "We shall fight the elections together." After the Brajarajnagar bypoll, preparations for the 2024 elections will commence," he added.

He is in his second term as president of the OPCC. From 2001 to 2004, he was the state's chief of police.

Sarat was elected to the Lok Sabha from Balangir in the 1990s and served as the president of the State Youth Congress.
