Keonjhar: On Thursday, a baby elephant was rescued from an abandoned well by forest department officials in Odisha's Keonjhar district's Champua area.
According to sources, the elephant calf fell into the 10-foot deep well in a forest area along the Baitarani River at Tuntuna, which is part of the Champua forest range.
The baby elephant was apparently separated from a herd of 24 elephants that had arrived from the Kalikaprasad Reserve forest on Wednesday night. There were nine tuskers, six female elephants, and nine calfs in the herd. The jumbo herd was making its way through Kanchanpur towards Tuntuna forest.
After being notified, forest officials rushed to the scene and launched a rescue operation early this morning, safely removing the calf using a JCB.
According to DFO Dhanraj Hanumant, the baby elephant was in good condition and was later released back into the forest.
