Jajpur: On Tuesday morning, a portion of a bridge on National Highway 16, which connects Chennai and Kolkata, sank near Rasulpur in Odisha's Jajpur district, disrupting vehicular traffic on the Bhubaneswar-Balasore route.
People nearby heard a loud noise around 6 a.m. and discovered that a portion of the bridge had caved in by about 6-7 ft., according to sources. "A span of the bridge began to sink after a bus passed through it." "A major accident was avoided due to the alertness of a tractor driver and a home guard from the Kuakhai police station," said a police officer.
To avoid accidents, the affected stretch has been barricaded, and hundreds of stranded vehicles are being diverted to clear the route.
Though the cause of the incident has not been determined, locals blamed the sudden collapse of the bridge, which was reportedly built in 2007-08.
