A day after reaching Bahanaga in Odisha's Balasore district, a team from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) stepped up its investigation into the horrific triple train mishap that killed at least 278 people and injured over 1100 more.

Bhubaneswar: A day after reaching Bahanaga in Odisha's Balasore district, a team from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) stepped up its investigation into the horrific triple train mishap that killed at least 278 people and injured over 1100 more.

Following their arrival, the 10-member CBI team went to the Bahanaga railway station and began their investigation. According to sources, the CBI sleuths are accompanied by a forensic team.

The team members examined various equipment and gadgets in the railway station's signal room. They also spoke with employees in the signal room and inquired about the operation of various pieces of equipment.

Aside from that, CBI sleuths searched the area where two passenger trains and a freight train collided on Friday evening.

The team members investigated the railway tracks on the property. They also examined both the loop line and the main line at Bahanaga, as well as interacting with railway officials to obtain various pieces of information as part of the investigation, which is expected to last some time.

The signal for the Coromandel Express on the loop line was green, according to the data logger. However, it is not technically possible. According to Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Khurda Road, Rinkesh Ray, tampering with the electronic interlocking system cannot be ruled out.

Following the accident, which claimed the lives of 278 people and injured more than 1,100 others, railway officials speculated on sabotage.

On Sunday evening, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that the Railway Board recommended a CBI investigation.

The Central agency takes over the Balasore GRP case number 64 registered by Odisha Police on June 3, a day after the accident, according to procedure.

According to a senior railway official, the CBI is conducting an investigation into all possible aspects. The investigation team is gathering various information, and the railways will fully cooperate.

On Sunday, Vaishnaw stated that the Railway Board recommended a CBI investigation based on our administrative information about the mishap. According to him, the investigation will look into the circumstances that led to the train accident and the people who were responsible for it.

According to a railway official, the Commissioner of Railway Safety and the CBI are both investigating the incident concurrently and independently.
