Bhubaneswar: The schism in the Odisha Congress surfaced again on Friday, when hundreds of party workers demonstrated at Master Canteen in Puri, demanding that the suspensions of Barabati-Cuttack MLA Mohammed Moquim and former working president Chiranjib Biswal be lifted immediately.

They took to the streets after failing to meet OPCC President Sarat Pattanayak at Congress Bhavan. "The two senior leaders were suspended in an undemocratic manner, which has harmed tens of thousands of workers across Odisha." Such action against the two leaders, who have contributed significantly to the party, is completely unjustified. "All of their statements were aimed at uniting the party," a protestor stated.

They have threatened to escalate the agitation in the coming day if the party does not withdraw their suspension order.

Supporters of Moquim and Biswal, led by former party spokesperson Gobind Bhuyan, had previously told the media that their suspension would harm the party's chances in the upcoming elections. He went on to say that Moquim won the party's Barabati-Cuttack seat in the 2019 Assembly elections after a 40-year absence, despite the fact that the Congress was struggling to remain relevant in state politics. Ten Congress corporators were elected to the Cuttack Municipal Corporation as a result of his support, he claimed.

He added that the party had won the Jagatsinghpur municipality elections because of Biswal's influence in the area.

Senior leader Sabitri Choudhury claimed that the two suspended leaders' anti-party activities were never discussed in the disciplinary committee and that filing a complaint against them to the AICC without following the proper procedure was unwarranted.

Denying any party split, the OPCC president stated that he had not received any letter or application for the suspension of Moquim or Biswal.
