Bhubaneswar: In the midst of an increase in snatching incidents in Bhubaneswar, some unidentified miscreants allegedly attempted to steal valuables from the parents of IPS officer Sagarika Nath, who is currently serving as Balasore SP, near AMRI Hospital in Kolathia area within Bharatpur police limits on Sunday.
According to sources, two bike-borne miscreants approached them on the pretext of seeking directions to a location while they were on their way to Satya Sai Enclave and attempted to steal their valuables. When the IPS officer's mother objected, they smashed the car's windscreen and driver side window with an iron rod he was carrying on his bike.
Her husband, who was driving, crashed the vehicle into their bike. The thugs collapsed and were forced to flee, leaving their motorcycle behind.
The matter came to light after the IPS officer's family filed a written complaint with Bharatpur police. According to sources, both offenders were wearing helmets, and the couple claimed in their complaint that they were even manhandled.
Police have seized the motorcycle with a forged registration number and are examining footage from nearby CCTV cameras to identify the suspect. A case has been filed under Indian Penal Code (IPC) Sections 354B, 394, and 397.
"The incident occurred around 8.30 p.m. The thugs attempted but failed to rob my parents. We have filed a police report in this regard. "An investigation is underway," Nath told the media.
DCP Prateek Singh of Bhubaneswar later told the media that the two suspects in the incident had been identified and would be arrested soon.
CCTV footage of two bike-riding miscreants stealing a gold chain from a woman in Vani Vihar went viral on Sunday. Following that, patrolling in the city was increased.
