Bhubaneswar: Amidst the country's skyrocketing tomato prices, a man allegedly fled with 2 kg of tomatoes worth Rs 280 after promising two street children, whom he described as his sons, to a shopkeeper in Odisha's Cuttack city.

Chhatra Bazaar reported the incident.

According to sources, the fraudster took the boys, who were around 11 years old, from the Sikharchandi slum in Bhubaneswar to Cuttack to buy a fridge. Despite the fact that he had paid them Rs 10 and promised them another Rs 300, they had no idea what his plans were. He recognized the children as his son and asked them to pick fresh vegetables from a crowded shop nearby.

He then had the vendor pack 2 kg tomatoes and fled the scene on the plea to retrieve his wallet from his bike.

When the man did not return after 30 minutes, the vendor asked the two boys about him and was shocked to learn that the man was not their father. He, on the other hand, let them go without reporting the incident to the police.

DCP (Cuttack) Pinak Mishra told TOI that he would have the Malgodown police investigate the incident. "We'll look through the CCTV footage for clues about the man," he said.
