Bhubaneswar: The death toll from the horrific triple train crash in Odisha's Bahanaga Bazar station rose to 289 on Tuesday after an injured passenger died while receiving treatment at SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack, according to a family source.
Vijay Pasvan, a Bihar native, has been identified as the deceased.
On the fateful evening, he and four relatives boarded the Chennai-bound Coromandel Express from Shalimar for Palghar when it collided with the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express following the derailment after ramming a stationary goods train on separate tracks, killing 211 passengers.
Pasvan was shifted to SCB in critical condition on the day of the train accident on June 2, according to sources. He was being treated at the state-run hospital's Central ICU. "The doctors informed us last night that his condition is worsening because his blood pressure suddenly dropped and he complained of breathing problems." He had a spinal problem as a result of neck injuries. "Despite the fact that his entire body was paralyzed from neck to toe due to the injury, he was able to communicate with others," the deceased's brother told the media.
They learned of his death around 10 a.m.
However, no official confirmation of the increased death toll has been made as of yet. The state government and the railways had previously stated that 288 people had died in the train accident.
According to the sources, 81 injured passengers are currently being treated at SCB, with 11 of them being in the intensive care unit.
