Bhubaneswar: With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting a slight drop in day temperature, schools across Odisha resumed morning classes on Monday with different times.

While morning classes were held from 7 a.m. to 11.30 a.m. on April 11, the Odisha government announced that all schools up to Class X would be closed for five days beginning April 12 due to a sudden rise in daytime temperatures and intense heatwave conditions sweeping the state.

On April 15, a new notification was issued with revised school and college start times that are 30 minutes earlier than the current schedule. Morning classes will now run from 6.30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

The Department of School and Mass Education has also advised educational institutions to take precautions for dealing with extreme temperatures, such as preparing glucose and ORS solutions for students, ensuring the availability of drinking water, and limiting outdoor activities to avoid heatwave conditions.

"District collectors can change school hours based on the summer conditions in their district." Schools must make proper arrangements for drinking water and other facilities in light of the heatwave, according to the official notification.

On Sunday, the state's maximum temperature reached 40 degrees Celsius in 22 locations. Jharsuguda, an industrial town in western Odisha, had the highest temperature of 43 degrees Celsius. Cuttack and Bhubaneswar's temperatures remained below 40 degrees Celsius.

The MeT office has forecast light to moderate rain for several areas across the state and has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms and lightning until the morning of April 21. The daytime temperature may drop by 2-3°C over the next three days, but there will be no significant change after that. "The day temperature is very likely to be 40°C or higher and will remain 2-3°C above normal in a few places," it added.
