Angul: Tensions were high in Pateli village in Odisha's Angul district on Thursday after a tusker killed two people.

Shankar Biswal and Jhili Majhi have been identified as the victims.

The tusker, according to sources, has been wreaking havoc in the area for the last few days. It attacked Jhili, 42, in front of her house and killed her instantly. Its next victim was Shankar (62), who had gone to a nearby canal. The elephant attack also critically injured Akshaya Nayak of nearby Saharaguda village. He was taken to the district headquarters hospital.

Following the deaths, enraged residents blocked the Angul-Bantala road by torching tyres. They demanded Rs 20 lakh in compensation and a government job for each of the bereaved families, as well as immediate action to prevent future attacks. Following the protest, several vehicles were left stranded. Police arrived on the scene and attempted to appease them.
