Malkangiri: On Thursday, two minor girls drowned after falling into a water-filled pit in the village of Dhepasahi in the Chitrakonda area of Odisha's Malkangiri district.
According to reports, the incident occurred while the children were playing near a roadside pit in Dhepasahi. Subhadra Kamar (4) and Sumi Janam (4) were identified as the deceased (3).
The pit, which a contractor had previously dug for water storage during road construction in the area, had been filled with water. While playing near the pit, the girls slipped into it.
The villagers rescued them in critical condition and rushed them to a hospital, where doctors declared them dead, according to the sources.
Angry at the mishap, the villagers blamed the contractor for the children's deaths and sought legal action against him. They also demanded that bereaved families be adequately compensated.
