87 rare species of turtles seized in Balasore, smuggler held
Balasore: During a raid in the Balasore district of Odisha's Jaleswar police jurisdiction along the Chalanti bypass road on National Highway-70, more than 80 turtles were saved by forest officers.
The unlawful trade was taking place when a team of forest officers, acting on a tip-off, conducted a raid along the Chalanti bypass route on Tuesday night. A juvenile named Debabrata Dey was detained in this regard. A bike was also removed from the scene by the authorities.
Sources claim that 87 turtles in total were being trafficked into West Bengal. The turtles were being sold by the defendant, Debabrata, for Rs 250 per kg.
“We continuously receiving reports regarding smuggling on this national highway. He was riding his bike with two large, heavy sacks strapped to the sides. "We followed him because we thought something wasn't right, and we caught him along the Chalanti bypass route," said Jayashri Murmu, a Jaleswar Ranger.
