COVID vaccine for children aged 5 to 12 years has been recommended: Health Director

Bhubaneswar: Bijay Panigrahi, the State Health & Family Welfare Director, said on Friday that the COVID-19 vaccination will be given to children aged 5 to 12 only when the Centre issues comprehensive recommendations to states.

"A COVID vaccine for children aged 5 to 12 years has been recommended by an expert panel of the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) for emergency use." Following that, states will be given instructions on how to administer the vaccination to children of a specific age range. As a result, plans will be put in place at schools and vaccination clinics," he said.

In Odisha, there are almost 50 lakh children aged 5 to 12.

Schoolchildren should get a COVID test if they get flu-like symptoms, according to Panigrahi. "We must exercise caution because cases are on the rise in other states." If the number of infections in Odisha increases, the mask rule may be reinstated. "The state's health infrastructure is ready," he continued.

On Thursday, a DCGI expert panel recommended that the COVID vaccination Corbevax be given emergency use authorization for children aged 5 to 12.

Corbevax is India's first indigenously created RBD protein sub-unit vaccine against the coronavirus, developed by Hyderabad-based Biological-E.

It will be given to youngsters aged 12 to 14 starting on March 16, 2022.
