Dhamnagar bypoll result: Counting trend also in BJP favour in 14th round

Bhubaneswar: By strengthening its position in the Dhamnagar Assembly constituency, where Suryabanshi Suraj is leading incumbent Abanti Das by 7,661 votes during the 14th round of counting on Sunday, the BJP appears to have slowed the BJD's momentum.

Son of Bishu Sethi, whose passing called for the byelection, Suryabanshi has so far received 63,031 votes, while Abanti has received 55,370. The data make it clear that the addition of former BJD leader and former MLA Rajendra Das into the race has hurt the chances of the ruling party winning the byelection. Das has received 7,147 votes so far.

In 2019, when Sethi defeated Das by a margin of 4,625 votes, the BJP had a larger lead than it does at this point.

Although more women than men cast ballots in 252 polling places on November 3, which witnessed a turnout of 68.98%, the saffron party appears to have improved its position in the constituency. The regional party has used the woman card to try to stem the tide of sympathy for Suryabanshi.

The purportedly revitalised Congress has only managed to pass 2,751 votes.

Notably, despite the sympathy wave for the saffron party, the BJD had won all five byelections in the state since 2019 and wrested the Balasore Sadar seat from the BJP. Additionally, in the panchayat and civic elections held in February and April of this year, respectively, it won all six Zilla Parishad seats and nine out of the eleven wards of the Dhamnagar Notified Area Council (NAC).

After 18 rounds of counting, the Dhamnagar seat results will be announced.
