Bhubaneswar: While monsoon and thunderstorm activity reduced the rain deficit in Odisha by about 10% in two days, the regional centre of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has anticipated an increase in rainfall activity beginning June 20.

Conditions continue favourable for the southwest monsoon to spread into additional sections of the state over the next three days, according to the MeT office, and rain is expected in several regions during the next four to five days.

"On the 20th and 21st of June, light to moderate rain or thundershowers are likely in various places," said Umasankar Das, Scientist, Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre. On June 20, the Ganjam, Kandhamal, and Mayurbhanj districts have issued a heavy rainfall warning for one or two locations.

Since the start of monsoon on Thursday, the state has received 33.7 mm of rain, with the highest of 80 mm in Koraput in the last 24 hours. On Thursday, heavy rain pelted one or two locations in Koraput and Kandhamal, while heavy rain was forecast for one or two locations in Jajpur, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Cuttack, and Nayagarh on Friday.

On Saturday, the IMD predicts thunderstorms with lightning in Cuttack, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore, and 13 other districts, as well as light to moderate rain in many places in North interior Odisha and a few spots in the state's remaining districts.
