Naba Das assassination: BJP terms appointment of Retd Justice to monitor probe ‘illegal’

Bhubaneswar: The BJP launched a scathing attack on Odisha's BJD government over the death of Naba Das on Tuesday, claiming that Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has lost faith in the Crime Branch of state police, which is investigating the mysterious murder case.

By requesting that the Orissa High Court appoint a sitting or retired judge to oversee the investigation into the sensational murder case, the state government has demonstrated that it has lost faith in the Crime Branch, according to BJP spokesperson Pitambar Acharya.

The senior BJP leader told reporters in Bhubaneswar that the Naveen Patnaik government should make public the order naming the retired judge to oversee the investigation into the murder.

He called the appointment of retired High Court judge Justice JP Das illegal, questioned the basis for the High Court's monitoring committee's formation, and claimed that the state government is abusing the HC.

Acharya questioned why the state government would use the name of the High Court when this is not a judicial proceeding or consultation under the Judicial Commission Act.

Furthermore, the senior BJP leader and advocate stated that Justice J P Das was not judicially appointed to monitor and supervise a statutorily conducted police investigation.

Supporters and friends of the slain Minister claim that some top leaders are behind a murder conspiracy, and that efforts should be made to identify the conspirators.

It appears that the Chief Minister does not want to know about the conspiracy or identify the conspirators, according to Acharya, who added that Naveen should take steps to delegate the investigation to a third party, such as the CBI, to ensure transparency.

BJD leaders dismissed Acharya's allegations, saying the opposition has a habit of making wild claims.
