Bhubaneswar: With the heatwave expected to subside, schools across Odisha reopened on Wednesday after the summer break, with the exception of seven districts.

Due to the sweltering heat, the administrations of western Odisha districts have delayed school reopening dates and altered class schedules.

Schools in Jharsuguda, Balangir, and Sambalpur will reopen on June 22, with morning classes continuing until June 24.

Classes will resume on June 23 in Sundargarh, Sonepur, Bargarh, and Nuapada. Classes will be held from 6.30 a.m. to 10 a.m. on these two days, and will resume on June 26 at their regular times.

Notably, in light of the current heatwave, the state government had asked collectors in these seven districts to either switch to morning classes or extend holidays.

With the IMD predicting the onset of the southwest monsoon over Odisha by June 22, Bhubaneswar and Sambalpur were the hottest in the state on Tuesday, with temperatures reaching 42.1 degrees Celsius, while two other western Odisha towns, Jharsuguda and Titlagarh, recorded 42 degrees. Hirakud recorded 41.9 degrees Celsius, Sonepur 41.8 degrees, Balangir 41.2 degrees, and Sundargarh 41 degrees.

Due to the extreme heat this year, the state government declared an early summer vacation for students.
