Puri: The pulling of Devi Subhadra's Darpadalana and Lord Jagannath's Nandighosha, which were stuck midway, resumed on Wednesday, a day after the sibling deities of Jagannath Temple in Odisha's Puri embarked on their 9-day annual sojourn.
While rituals were completed an hour ahead of schedule, the scorching heat slowed chariot pulling, and only Taladhwaja of Lord Balabhadra could reach Gundicha temple last evening.
A staggering 11 to 12 lakh devotees flocked to Grand Road to see the deities ride chariot to their birthplace, Gundicha Temple. As a wave of euphoria swept across Puri, chants of Jai Jagannath reverberated across the town, they jostled for rope during the pulling of chariots.
Governor Ganeshi Lal, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Chief Justice of the Orissa High Court S Muralidhar, and Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan were among the chariot pullers.
It was difficult for security and volunteers to keep the crowd under control.
Hundreds of devotees were also seriously ill as a result of the heat and were rushed to hospitals. A dozen people were injured after they collided with a motorcycle parked by the roadside while pulling Lord Balabhadra's Taladhwaja chariot near Marchikot Chowk, about 300 meters from the Jagannath Temple. Several others were also injured in the commotion caused by Lord Jagannath's Nandighosha being pulled.
