Bahanaga: Odisha Energy Minister Pratap Keshari Deb, who has come under fire from various quarters for the state's frequent power outages, was at an event in Bahanaga, Balasore district, to pay tribute to the victims of the recent triple train accident.
Apart from the Minister, a local MLA and a slew of other dignitaries were present at the all-faith prayer meeting held at Bahanaga on Monday when the power went out unexpectedly.
The power outage at the Energy Minister's event occurred at a time when the entire state is experiencing scorching heat and oppressive humidity.
Nobody could figure out how the electricity supply had been disrupted. After about 30 minutes, the power was restored. While a power generator was used to provide backup power, normal power was restored later.
When asked about the power outage, the Minister avoided media questions.
Following the incident, residents questioned Pratap Deb's claim that no power outages occur in the state except during thunderstorms or lightning strikes. However, they pointed out that the power went out at the Minister's event despite the fact that the weather was clear and there was no storm in the area.
In another development regarding the power outage issue, students from the Odisha Congress staged a protest in front of the official residence of the Energy Minister in Bhubaneswar on Monday, protesting frequent disruptions in electricity supply across the state.
Demonstrators demanded the Minister's resignation over the issue, accusing him of being responsible for making life miserable for the people due to frequent power outages.
