Bhubaneswar: Two people were critically burned when the blast furnace's steam pipeline in a power plant at Tata Steel's Meramundali works burst on Tuesday. They are being treated in intensive care.

"Of the 18 burn victims admitted to a private hospital in Cuttack, two remain in intensive care under the vigilant watch of medical professionals, including a team from Tata Steel," the company said in a statement released on Wednesday.

It went on to say that the condition of others is stable and that they are receiving high-quality care on a continuous basis. Another person who was initially admitted for a panic attack at the scene is now in good health and is expected to be discharged soon, according to the statement.

At least 18 people were injured in the incident, which occurred around 1 p.m. while a team of workers and plant officials were reportedly working on the maintenance of the blast furnace pipeline. One engineer, a supervisor, and the rest of the contractual workers were among those injured. They were rushed to the occupational health center and then to a private hospital in Cuttack.

Notably, Mohit Das, Tata Steel's Chief of Corporate Services, put the figure at 17, claiming that another worker had panicked. According to Dhenkanal SP Gyanaranjan Mohapatra, approximately 19 people were injured in the incident.

While the factory and boiler inspectors investigate to determine who is to blame, Tata Steel has launched an internal investigation to determine what caused the accident. During the inspection, the steam line burst and hot water poured on the workers, according to a directorate official.
