Bhubaneswar: Sudarsan Pattnaik, a sand artist, built the world's largest hockey stick on the banks of the Mahanadi on Wednesday, ahead of the FIH Hockey Men's World Cup 'Celebrations' opening ceremony at Barabati Stadium in Odisha's Cuttack city.

The 105-foot-long hockey stick, made from 5000 hockey balls and over five tonnes of sand, also displays the recently completed Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium in Rourkela, complete with 16 national flags of the competing teams. He finished the art installation in two days.

"The World Cup has created a joyous atmosphere throughout the state. It is a very memorable day for the people of Odisha, and there are celebrations all around the state. "We wanted to create something unique this time to welcome everyone to this wonderful city, which is why we thought of using hockey balls and constructing this installation," he said.

Sudarsan designed an exhibit reflecting famous Odisha structures such as Konark at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar during the 2018 World Cup.

A slew of Bollywood stars, including Ranveer Singh and Disha Patani, will also take the stage at the ceremony, which begins at 3 p.m.

From January 13 to 29, matches will be held at Kalinga and Birsa Munda stadiums.
