Sambalpur: The man was rescued by Fire Services officials near Samalei Temple ghat on Tuesday after allegedly jumping into the Mahanadi from Chaunrapur bridge in Odisha's Sambalpur district.

Surendra Mohan Mishra (69), a resident of Sambalpur's SRIT Colony and a retired government employee, has been recognized as the survivor.

While morning walkers who saw him at the bridge feared he was attempting suicide by jumping into the Mahanadi and informed police and Fire Services personnel, Mishra told the media that he tripped and fell into the river while snapping a selfie on the bridge. "I grabbed a bunch of grass and stayed afloat."

"I'm lucky to have survived the river," he remarked, adding that he also dropped his phone.

His scooter and slippers were discovered on the bridge, which raised suspicions.
