Phulbani: A landmine explosion killed a youth under Phiringia police limits on Wednesday, a day when Maoist posters emerged at various locations in Odisha's Kandhmal district.

The youth, named as Priyaranjan Kanhara of Kiamunda village, was killed on the spot in the explosion near Sadingia- Kiamunda in the district, according to sources.

The landmine is thought to have been put by Maoists to prevent peasants from voting in the panchayat elections. This morning, several posters were discovered plastered in various locations within the Baliguda police boundaries in the district.

Maoists set two JCB machines on fire in Kiamunda village, Kandhamal district's Phiringia police limits, on Monday night. The machines, according to police, belonged to the Trishakti business and were used for road building from Nuapadar to Pindangi.

Left-wing radicals had also put up posters at the location, urging people not to vote in the panchayat elections.

On Tuesday, Inspector General of Police (Southern Range) Satyabrata Bhoi stated that the Maoists will not be permitted to disturb the panchayat elections in any way, and that the public should not be alarmed by their call for a poll boycott.

"The Maoists are already on the back foot as a result of the police and security forces' ongoing operations. "They are having a hard time gaining support from the locals and tribals," Bhoi remarked.

On February 5, Mohangiri journalist Rohit Biswal was killed after an IED believed to have been planted by Maoists exploded along a bridge in Kalahandi's Madanpur Rampur district. The deceased was employed for a major vernacular newspaper.
