Cuttack: On Wednesday, two elephants became trapped in the middle of the Mahanadi near Bhagipur in the Banki region of Odisha's Cuttack.

After being warned by neighbours, a crew from the Forest Department arrived on the scene and is keeping a close eye on the wild creatures' movements. While efforts are being made to attract the animals to the shore, they appear to be staying away owing to the large number of people present.

The gigantic couple was apparently crossing the river from Sukasen forest to Chandaka sanctuary when they were caught in the waterbody late night, according to sources.

This comes almost a year after a tusker perished after becoming stranded in the overflowing Mahanadi while attempting to save a calf from its herd from drowning.
