Villagers Protest And Blocks Road Over Police Fake Encounter In Name Of Maoist At Koraput

Malkangiri: Several agitators were apprehended by police while establishing a road barricade on NH-326 in Odisha's Malkangiri district, alleging the gunning down of two innocent people in the name of an anti-naxal operation.

While authorities first announced that two Maoists were killed in a gun battle with security forces in Koraput district's Malipadar jungle on Friday, demonstrators claimed that the victims were daily wagers, not naxals.

The road blockade that has been in place since Sunday has continued to impede vehicular movement between Malkangiri and Jeypore in Koraput. Normalcy in highway traffic was restored after police apprehended the agitators.

The deceased's family members, Dhana Kamar of Sargiguda village in Malkangiri and Jaya Kumar Nag of Nuagada village in Kosagumuda police limits in Nabarangpur district, said the encounter was staged.

Since Sunday, a huge group of villagers and Kamar's relatives have been blocking NH-326 near Kotameta, seeking Rs 30 lakh in compensation for his family.

They stated that Kamar, a labourer, was travelling through the forest to Kotpad when he was slain and subsequently labelled a Maoist by the police.

Nag's family members made similar assertions, claiming that he had no ties to the Maoists.

According to police, two Maoists were killed in an exchange of fire with security personnel in Malipadar forest in Koraput's Boipariguda block on Friday. They claimed several guns, ammunition, and other items were also seized during the forest search.
