Bhubaneswar: A woman postal agent from Odisha's Jagatsinghpur was arrested by Twin City Commissionerate Police for allegedly misappropriating crores of rupees in deposits.
Swarnalata Das has been identified as the accused.
She had collected money from many depositors by identifying herself as a postal agent over the last two years, but had embezzled it fraudulently, according to sources.
A complaint was filed against her at the Lingaraj police station, alleging that she took Rs 15,00,000 in instalments to deposit in an account holder's post office savings. She took the complainant's saving passbook, RD passbook, and FD Ppssbook and refused to return them despite repeated requests. When the complainant went to Swarnalata's house on Kendar Lane in this city, she was abused in filthy language and threatened with dire consequences.
Following her arrest, 127 postal passbooks belonging to 98 depositors were seized from her home. This case was being investigated further.
